We live in a cold climate where temperatures often dip well below zero—both Fahrenheit and Celsius! To enjoy the outdoors year-round, practical footwear is essential. But after dealing with chronic foot pain myself, I’ve learned that comfort and foot health are just as important—especially for growing feet. The barefoot winter boots listed below are the ones I personally trust for my children. They meet my top priorities: protecting their feet from harsh weather without compromising natural movement or development. This is the same standard I apply to all my kids’ footwear. Before we dive into the winter boot options, here are a few tips for keeping warm in even the coldest conditions. Winter Shoe Hacks These winter essentials are staples in our home. They help us stay warm, active, and comfortable in our wide toe box boots all season long. Wool insoles (Felty for extra thickness, Woolly for a slimmer fit) – I always keep a spare pair around for boots that need a little warmth boost. They make a huge difference in staying cozy. Wool socks – my younger son loves Plus 12 socks, while my older son prefers Creepers toe socks. Both keep their feet warm and comfortable all day. Waterproofing products – Kids can be hard on shoes, and waterproofing doesn’t always last. It’s worth keeping a good product on hand to refresh water resistance mid-season. Boot dryer – I’ve used this exact one on our floor vents (fan air only, no heat) for years, and it’s been a game changer. If you don’t have vents, an electric boot dryer works too. It’s saved us more times than I can count—no one likes cold, wet shoes! Now let’s dive into the best warm barefoot winter boots for kids—boots that keep little feet toasty while supporting natural movement and healthy development. Our Favorite Barefoot Winter Boots for Kids These boots are great for kids of all ages—from toddlers to those wearing adult sizes. If you’ve got a little one, skip ahead to the Toddler & Baby Winter Boots section. If your child is in adult sizes, head over to my main barefoot boot guides for the best options! HYKES Blizzard Textile | Waterproof | Sizes US K13-Y6 Hykes Kids Barefoot Boots The HYKES Blizzard is a rugged, zero-drop barefoot boot built for cold, wet weather while supporting natural foot movement. Designed for both men and women, its tall profile offers solid protection without sacrificing flexibility or foot health. With a wide toe box and non-slip sole, it’s great for maintaining healthy posture in winter conditions. Inside, the Blizzard features a roomy, anatomical footbed that lets toes spread naturally. The thin, pliable sole provides excellent ground feel, encouraging foot strength and all-day comfort. The soft, flexible materials and secure upper help with traction on slick or icy surfaces. Overall, the Blizzard stands out as a reliable barefoot winter boot with a foot-friendly fit. Its thoughtful design promotes comfort, support, and alignment—making it a practical choice for anyone looking to stay warm without compromising on natural movement. Fulham II Winterised Kids Leather | Waterproof | US 4K-6J Vivobarefoot Boots The Vivobarefoot Fulham is one barefoot kids boot that does it all: rain, snow, cold weather, and more. I get them for my older boy every year (this is our 6th year in them) because they fit his long feet really well and have the best functionality of any barefoot kids winter boot we’ve tried. We always take out the thermal insole that comes with our Vivobarefoot shoes and instead use a sheepskin or wool insole for more warmth. If you live in a cold climate, I highly recommend doing the same, as the Vivo insoles just don’t cut it for us. After that adjustment, the Fulham works as a one-and-done boot for us all season long. Sizing & Fit: True to size. Ideal for medium-width feet. Best suited for medium volume (height/top of the foot). Be Lenka Snowfox Leather & Textile | Waterproof | Sizes EU 25-35 Be Lenka Winter Boots Our favorite winter shoe from Be Lenka is the Snowfox (above left). It’s easy for my son to put on, and the laces make the boot fully adjustable for a secure fit on just about any foot type. They’re well-insulated and warm enough to handle our frigid Midwest winters. Plus, they have an extra wide fit—so if you like the Vivobarefoot Lumi but need more width, the Snowfox is a great choice. The one downside is that the water resistance isn’t as strong as the Lumi. While all waterproofing eventually wears down, I expected a bit more protection here. If you’ve got an especially active kid, I recommend applying Sno Seal or a similar waterproofing product mid-season to help keep moisture out. The Kids Winter (above right) is another warm barefoot option from Be Lenka. They’re not quite as easy to get on, so my child prefers the Snowfox. But they have a dressier look and hug the ankle nicely for a secure, close fit. Sizing & Fit: The Snowfox fits true to size, while the Kids Winter runs a bit big. Snowfox is ideal for wide feet, whereas the Kids Winter is best suited for average-width feet. Both boots work well for medium volume, but they can feel a bit snug across the top if your child has high-volume feet. Softstar Phoenix Leather & Sheepskin | Custom Color Options | Sizes US 7C-4Y Softstar Phoenix The Softstar Phoenix is a supremely cozy sheepskin boot, handmade in Oregon. I wear the Phoenix in adult sizes and can vouch for the excellent quality. You can even choose custom colors, which my son thought was the coolest part. The foot portion is made of smooth leather and is naturally water-resistant, but the upper is suede—so water can soak through in wet snow. I recommend treating them with something like SnoSeal if your child will be wearing them in slushy or snowy conditions. One thing to keep in mind: they have a side zipper but no other adjustments. My son liked wearing them without socks, and once the boot broke in, it got a little floppy—he actually walked right out of them into the snow! So while they’re incredibly warm and soft, they work best with socks or for kids with thick, high-volume feet. Sizing & Fit: Runs small—sizing up one is recommended. Great for wide feet. Well-suited for high volume (tall) feet. Wildling Shoes Water Resistant | Wool | Sizes 3C-4Y (baby to big kid) Shop Kids Winter Wildlings Oh Wildling Shoes, how we love your sock-like feel and cozy warmth! These are a big favorite in our house thanks to their lightweight comfort paired with surprising warmth and water resistance. For the best cold-weather performance, I recommend choosing models made entirely of wool and adding a wool insole to your order. This combo keeps my kids—and me—warm and dry. It’s amazing how practical such a minimal shoe can be! Just keep in mind, they’re not snow boots—snow can get in through the top, and extended time in wet conditions may lead to some moisture inside. Wildling’s wool models are perfect for school days, short outings, and milder winter weather. They’re easy to wear, super flexible, and great for keeping feet warm without the bulk. Sizing & Fit: True to size. Fits average to wide feet. High volume—add an extra wool insole for a better fit if your child has low volume feet. See which Barefoot Shoes made our Top 5 Listand why they’re loved by walkers, runners, and explorers. Zeazoo Dingo Sheepskin | Waterproofable | Sizes EU 20-34 Shop Zeazoo Boots Zeazoo makes wonderfully soft and lightweight barefoot sheepskin boots for kids. While they aren’t quite as thick or durable as the Softstar Phoenix, they offer more flexibility and just as much warmth. If you’re after a simple, pull-on style like Uggs, the Zeazoo Dingo is a great pick. Just keep in mind that the minimalist design isn’t ideal for rough outdoor play—they’re more like ultra-warm slippers! If you want something with a more secure fit, check out the Zeazoo Yeti, which offers adjustability for a snugger, more supportive feel. My son wore his Dingos through an entire winter, and after treating them with SnoSeal, they kept his feet warm and dry even during long outings in sub-freezing temperatures. That said, the boots did show wear by the end of the season. So while they’re a great cozy option, I’d recommend them mainly for lighter use or as a warm everyday boot rather than heavy-duty snow adventures. Sizing & Fit: True to size for kids, but runs large in adult sizes. Extra wide fit. High volume—great for thick or tall feet. Feelgrounds Vegan | Waterproof | Sizes EU 22-37 Shop Feelgrounds Feelgrounds offers kids’ vegan Chelsea and lace-up boots lined with warm microfiber. While they’re not heavy-duty snow boots, they do a solid job keeping little feet cozy and dry in most everyday winter conditions. The Patrol boot (left) features a waterproof membrane, while the Chelsea (right) is water-resistant. They’re slightly stiffer than I typically prefer for kids’ barefoot shoes, but they make up for it with durability and grippy outsoles that handle slick ground well. Plus, their more polished look makes them versatile enough for both outdoor adventures and dressier occasions. If you’re looking for a functional barefoot boot that can double as a nice-looking winter shoe, Feelgrounds strikes a good balance between style and practicality. Sizing & Fit: Mostly true to size, but we recommend sizing up in the Patrol model. Wide fit. Medium volume—works well for average foot height. Froddo Leather & Textile | Waterproof | Sizes EU 25-42 Froddo Froddo boots are high-quality with solid winter functionality. They’re a great choice if you’re looking for something durable and well-made. However, they run more average to slim in width, so they may not be the best fit for extra wide little feet. Still, the craftsmanship and materials make them a dependable option for many kids. Koel Leather | Waterproof Options | Sizes EU 20-41 Koel Shoes Koel offers a variety of practical and warm winter boots for kids. The quality is solid, though they can feel a bit stiff at first. With some wear, they soften up nicely. For cold weather, I recommend choosing the wool-lined models—they provide great insulation and comfort through the winter months. Budget Kids Barefoot Winter Boots Here are the most affordable barefoot winter boots for kids that still support natural movement and healthy foot development—proof that you don’t have to spend a fortune to keep little feet warm and happy! Saguaro Synthetic Textile | Not Water Resistant | US Kids 8.5 – Youth 3.5 Saguaro Will Saguaro offers a range of affordable barefoot winter boots and shoes for kids, available in a full size range. Our top pick is the Will—they’re extra wide, super soft, and flexible, all for around $50 with my coupon code. They’re perfect for days when your child wants warmth but doesn’t need a full-on snow boot. Just keep in mind that they’re made from synthetic fabric and are not water-resistant, so they can get wet easily. My kids wear them for dry winter days or quick outdoor play when warmth matters more than waterproofing. Durability-wise, my youngest’s pair has some wear on the soles and edge separation—but that’s expected with how hard kids are on shoes. Despite the wear, they keep reaching for them! (For the record, my own Saguaro boots are still holding up great—because I’m not a tiny tornado.) Sizing & Fit: Runs small—we always size up. Wide fit (in the models highlighted here). Works well for all foot volumes. Ten Little Insulated Polyester | Water Resistant Membrane | Fleece Lining | Sizes US 6-13 Ten Little Snow Boots Ten Little offers these adorable and functional snow boots designed just for toddlers and little kids! The insulated polyester upper feels like a cozy puffer jacket, and the boots are easy to get on and off thanks to a wide side Velcro closure and an elastic toggle strap at the top for a snug fit. Even my 4-year-old can put them on by himself—which is a win in my book! I was especially happy to see that the outsole has grippy lugs for better traction, something many toddler boots lack. They’re warm, practical, and thoughtfully designed for little feet learning independence. Priced at $60, they’re currently available only up to size 13, but we’re hopeful that Ten Little will expand the size range in future seasons. Sizing & Fit: Runs on the small side—we recommend sizing up one from your child’s sneaker size. Average width. Suitable for medium to high volume feet. Jan and Jul Faux Sherpa lining | Water Resistant | Sizes US Kids 4-11 Jan and Jul Boots These insulated ankle boots are super cozy, warm, and extremely budget-friendly. They only go up to size 11, so my kids have already outgrown them—but Samantha’s younger ones are still getting great use out of theirs. They’re incredibly soft, easy to slip on, and perfect for little feet in colder weather! Sizing & Fit: True to size. Wide fit. Works well for all foot volumes.
